Ancient Greek bronze coin, set in a modern silver pendant with a decorative border. If preferred the coin can easily be removed from the silver pendant frame.

Coin: Sicily, Syracuse, Æ19, Hieron II, 275 - 215 BC.

Obverse: Diademed head of Poseidon left.
Reverse: IE?O-NOS Dolphins either side of ornamented trident-head; T (theta) - F (phi) in lower left and right fields

Hiero(n) II (308–215 BC), Greek tyrant and king of Syracuse, Sicily from 270-215 BC, who struggled against the Mamertini and eventually allied his city with Rome. He frequently supplied soldiers and provisions to the Romans during the Punic Wars.

Hieron maintained a powerful defensive fleet and employed his famous kinsman Archimedes to construct defensive devices for the city. Archimedes is regarded as the greatest mathematician and inventor of his age. The Crown of King Hieron II was the source of his famous 'Eureka' moment.

Hiero’s long reign was a period of peace and stability in Syracuse.
