Earrings with Celtic glass stratified 'Eye' beads with two monochrome Celtic glass beads.

The double pairs of 'eyes' are of blue glass surrounded by white glass circles on a yellow blackground. The layered Eye beads are made by fusing different colored glass rods, then cut in small pieces and pressed in a hot matrix. Finally the ring beads were smoothed and polished.

The place of manufacture is still uncertain, but it is likely they were imported from workshops in the eastern Mediterranean area.

The belief in the 'Evil Eye' dates back about 5.000 years and is present in many ancient cultures around the Mediterranean area. They are used as an amulet or talisman to ward off the evil eye. The staring eyes are supposed to reflect the malicious gaze back to the sorcerer.

In Celtic mythology it was a popular design and in many Celtic sites across Europe 'Evil Eye' beads have been discovered.  Evil eye beads were popularised with the Phoenicians, Persians, Greeks, Romans and Ottomans.

The ancient beads are brought back to life by using a variety of techniques and materials. This results in a versatile selection and styles to choose from, ranging from elegant and classic to a more contemporary look.

Ancient techniques
Some jewellery making techniques date back to ancient times. Linking beads with gold or silver or the use of leather cord is still popular to the present day.

The wire-wrapping technique dates back from ca. 2000 BC and was a favourite technique of jewellery makers in ancient civilizations. No soldering or heating was required and also had the advantage of making jewellery with cabochons or amulets by wrapping wire around the stones (no need to drill holes). The wire can be used to wrap around beads or it can be expertly bent into loops, spirals or other decorative shapes and also allows smaller beads to be wrapped and incorporated in the design.

Ancient & Roman beads
Every authentic ancient bead is slightly different in shape or colour shade and shows different signs of wear or the passing of time (iridescence). This adds to the charm of each piece and makes every composition unique.

Stone and shell beads have been worn as decoration or amulets since the Neolithic age. Faience beads appeared around 5500 years ago in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. In jewellery designs faience beads were often combined with gold and precious gemstones like Lapis Lazuli or carnelian beads. About 2000 years later glass making was invented, initially with just three simple components: sand quartz, soda ash and limestone.
