Heraclius, Eastern Roman Emperor (610-641 AD) reorganized and strengthened the Imperial administrations and the armies. While he successfully drove the Persians out of Asia Minor and defeated them at the Battle of Nineveh in 627, he ultimately lost significant territories, including Syria, Palestine, Jerusalem and Egypt.
Despite his earlier victories, the emergence of Islam and subsequent Arab conquests posed a formidable challenge to Byzantium’s territorial integrity.
In622 AD Heraclius set out to recover Jerusalem and the Cross from the Persians. In 630 AD he personally restored the Cross to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

Heraclius Constantine, also known as Constantine III, son of Heraclius and Eudoka was crowned co-Emperor at just 8 months old in 613 AD. After the death of his father Heraclius he ruled as Emperor for only three months in 641 AD. He was succeeded by his co-Emperor and half-brother Heraclonas.
