Postumus was a Roman military commander of Batavian origin who set himself up as an independent Emperor of the splinter state, known as the Gallic Empire. Postumus successfully defended the Rhine frontier and withstood Gallienus' attempts to recover Gaul, Britain and Spain.
He ruled Gaul, Germania, Britannia and Hispania for almost 10 years before he was killed in a mutiny by his own troops.
Postumus' coinage has been of particular interest to numismatists, in light of the high quality and relative abundance of his coin issues. His ‘Labours of Hercules’ series is particularly renowned.
