Roman Jewellery making Traditions
Our collection is inspired by the traditional Roman jewellery-making techniques. Each pendant is carefully handcrafted by one of our talented Dutch designers, using traditional jewellery-making techniques such as wire-wrapping and chain-linking. By combining genuine Roman beads with modern materials, we create versatile designs suitable for any occasion. These authentic Roman beads make each pendant a unique piece of historical heritage and timeless beauty.

The ancient Romans were renowned for their intricate jewellery designs, incorporating a wide variety of gemstones such as Lapis lazuli, emeralds, jasper, amber and carnelian. These precious materials were imported from far-reaching corners of the Roman Empire via expansive trade routes. These stretched from the Baltic region to the Persian Gulf, the Silk Road, and even as far as the Far East.

Roman artisans also perfected the art of glass-making, creating stunning glass beads that were often incorporated into jewellery. With advances in glass-making techniques, including the development of vibrant colours and intricate patterns, glass beads became a popular material in Roman jewellery. The use of glass allowed for a wider range of designs and more affordable options, making it accessible to both the elite and common people.

Popular Gemstones & Materials

🔵 Lapis Lazuli – A rare commodity and highly valued in Roman society. Lapis Lazuli symbolized wealth, luxury, and nobility. Its intense blue colour was linked to the heavens and divine protection. It was also thought to be an aphrodisiac and a symbol of peace and joy. Lapis was often used in amulets to ward off the 'Evil Eye' or other negative influences.
Lapis Lazuli was strongly associated with Jupiter. It was part of his name (Iuppiter Lapis) and one of his sacred emblems. Amulets made from Lapis Lazuli could be worn to invoke Jupiter’s favour, protection, and wisdom, as he was a god of divine authority and justice.

🔥 Carnelian – Like the Egyptians, the Romans believed carnelian had magical properties, boosting courage, vitality, and confidence. Soldiers wore it for strength, while women wore it to improve fertility and support their bodies before and after childbirth.

🟣 Amethyst – Amethyst was highly valued by the ancient Romans, Greeks and Egyptians. They believed amethyst had protective powers and associated it especially with the prevention of intoxication.
The ancient Romans adopted purple as a symbol of imperial authority and status and a symbol of the elite. The purple colour of the amethyst made it a popular material for jewellery, intaglios and amulets.

🟩 Emerald – Emeralds were symbols of wealth, power, and healing. Pliny the Elder even praised its medicinal properties. In Roman society, emeralds were also believed to protect against evil spirits and diseases. Some also believed that emeralds could give them clairvoyant powers.

Glass – The Romans learned the craft of glass-making after the conquest of Egypt in the 1st century BC.and later perfected the glass-making techniques and the production of coloured glass. Roman glass was traded all over the Roman Empire and far beyond to Central Africa, Scandinavia and via the Silk Route to China.

💎 Rock crystal – This transparent quartz was considered to have healing properties and was believed to enhance harmony, spiritual growth, and creativity. Romans valued it for its beauty and its association with new beginnings.

🟠 Amber – Amber was a very expensive and highly appreciated commodity in the Roman period. The Amber Road transported the 'Gold of the North' for thousands of years from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean area. Amber beads or amulets were very popular and attributed with healing and protective properties. Some Romans carried amber beads and rubbed them in their hands for strength or to calm the nerves.
