Roman Jewellery making Traditions
Our collections are inspired by Roman jewellery-making traditions. Linking chains and wire-wrapping techniques were favoured techniques and were used across many ancient cultures. Ancient beads are carefully selected by our designers and combined with modern materials, creating versatile, stylish bracelets for every occasion.

The ancient Romans were renowned for their intricate jewellery designs, incorporating a wide variety of gemstones such as Lapis lazuli, emeralds, jasper, amber, pearl and carnelian. These precious materials were often imported from far-reaching corners of the Roman Empire via expansive trade routes. These stretched from the Baltic region to the Persian Gulf, the Silk Road, and even as far as the Far East.

Roman Glass-Making: A Legacy of Colour and Craftsmanship
After the Roman conquest of Egypt in the 1st century BC, Roman artisans mastered and perfected the art of glass-making. They created stunning glass beads in vibrant, rich colours, which quickly became a hallmark of Roman jewellery. Roman glass beads in vibrant colours and intricate patterns were traded all over the Roman Empire and far beyond to Central Africa, Scandinavia and via the Silk Route to China.

The use of glass in jewellery design allowed artisans to experiment with intricate patterns and bold designs. Glass beads not only enhanced the beauty of Roman jewellery but also made these exquisite pieces more affordable, allowing both elite and common people to enjoy them. With their vibrant hues and versatility, glass beads became a popular material in rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, representing both the creativity and accessibility of Roman craftsmanship.

Popular Gemstones

🔵 Lapis Lazuli – A rare commodity and highly valued in Roman society. Lapis Lazuli symbolized wealth, luxury, and nobility. Its intense blue colour was linked to the heavens and divine protection. Lapis was associated with the Roman God Jupiter and was often used in amulets to ward off the 'Evil Eye'.

🔥 Carnelian – Like the Egyptians, the Romans believed carnelian had magical properties, boosting courage, vitality, and confidence. This gemstone was worn by Roman soldiers for strength and by women for fertility and help before and after childbirth.

🟣 Amethyst – Amethyst was highly valued by the ancient Romans, Greeks and Egyptians. They believed amethyst had protective powers and associated it especially with the prevention of intoxication. The ancient Romans adopted purple as a symbol of imperial authority and status and a symbol of the elite. The purple colour of the amethyst made it a popular material for jewellery, intaglios and amulets.

🟩 Emerald – Emeralds were symbols of wealth, power, and healing. Emeralds were believed to have protective qualities and were linked to clairvoyance.

💎 Rock crystal – This transparent quartz was considered to have healing properties and was believed to enhance harmony, spiritual growth, and creativity. Romans valued it for its beauty and its association with new beginnings.

🟠 Amber – Amber was a very expensive and highly appreciated commodity in the Roman period. The Amber Road transported the 'Gold of the North' for thousands of years from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean area. Amber beads or amulets were very popular and attributed with healing, calming the nerves and protective properties.

💡 Did you know? Nets used inside the amphitheatres were knotted with pieces of amber. Gladiators liked to adorn their breasts with amulet charms, and one such amulet was found with the words “We will conquer” carved into the amber.
