Maximinus I Thrax, Roman Emperor from 235-238 AD. Because of his Thracian origin he was given the nickname 'Thrax' (the Thracian).
He rose up through the military ranks under Emperor Severus Alexander and was commander of the Legio IV Italica. During the 'Crisis of the Third Century' Severus was murdered and Maximinus was proclaimed Emperor by the army.

A senatorial revolt broke out in 238 AD, known as the 'Year of the Six Emperors' when successively Gordian I, Gordian II, Pupienus, Balbinus and Gordian III were proclaimed Emperor in opposition to Maximinus. Maximinus and his son Maximus were both assassinated at Aquileia by disaffected members of the Legio II Parthica.
