Diocletian: Roman Emperor 284-305 AD. After a successful reign of 21 years Diocletian was the first Roman Emperor to abdicate voluntarily. The tetrarchic system which he established during his reign collapsed after his retirement and the Roman Empire fell into civil wars.

Genius (Roman mythology): the divine element of a person, place or thing. The Emperor's genius is an element of the ancient Roman Imperial cult.

GENIO POPVLI ROMANI: Latin for 'to the Genius (guardian spirit) of the Roman People'.
